18th September 2013

Weather not the best so far at Meiringen but none the less we ventured out for a look at the Reichenbach Falls. We have had lots of the rain the last 2 nights so it should be a good time to go look at the falls. To get to the falls, you go up in a funicular. This is a wooden carriage, a bit like a train carriage, and it is pulled up the mountain by a cable. When we got to the waterfall it was SO impressive. The volume of water flowing over the cliff was enormous and the noise was just incredible. There was so much spray coming off the falls and it created this swirling gale that made taking photos almost impossible. Those that ventured outside the viewing area quickly returned completely soaked.

The Reichenbach Falls is the place that Sherlock Holmes is said to have met his fate along with his arch-enemy, Moriarty. Meiringen is very famous for the tale of Sherlock Holmes and his demise at the falls and also is the place that is supposed to have created the meringues. On sale in all shapes and sizes in every bakery in the main street.

The passing section for the funiculars going up and down.

We could see the falls from across the valley. Notice the spray.

Just an old tower that we visited on a walk around Meiringen.
